Types of Netherlands Study Visas

The applicants from EU/EEA or Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, the US, and the Vatican City do not need either a resident permit or student visa. • Short stay up to 90 days – If you plan to study in the Netherlands for 90 days or less a Schengen visa would fulfill your requirement.
•  Long stay more than 90 days– An entry visa (MVV) and a residence permit (VVR) are required if you plan to study in the Netherlands for more than 90 days. Just like the short stay visa the MVV is also only valid for 90 days and has to be followed by the application for a VVR.

How to Apply for Netherlands Study Visa?

The first step of application for the Netherlands Study Visa would be to get an admission in a university in the Netherlands because universities apply for the resident visa on behalf of students. So we hope you already have your admission settled when you are starting your Study Visa application. Here are some additional things to keep in mind: 

• Your university will start the application procedure if this doesn’t happen then you need to contact them directly. The application costs about​​ € 192.
• The university request is approved or rejected and the result comes within 60 days from the day of your application. After the university’s request is approved you can apply for an entry visa at a local embassy or consulate in your country.
• You can collect the MVV after up to three months and get ready to travel to the Netherlands.
• The processing time for your visa application can take 60 to 90 days. 

Eligibility Criteria

There are certain conditions for the Netherlands Study Visa that apply to everyone which you and your educational institution have to meet. These procedures and conditions also apply to exchange students. The conditions are given below for your knowledge:

• You have to be accepted by a university or university of applied sciences as a student to a full-time to an accredited day program. The university or university of applied sciences should be a recognized sponsor. The recognized educational institutions are listed in the Public Register of Recognized Sponsors.
• Your official foreign documents should be legalized and translated into Dutch, English, French or German.
• You must have an independent, sufficient and sustainable income for paying the tuition fees and enough for living expenses. These can be proven by money in the student’s own bank account, deposit money in the student’s account at Netherlands university which is that you have put the tuition fees amount directly in the personal account at the university, international students getting funding from the government, university or any other third party organizations can also submit it as a proof of financial stability.
• You need to maintain at least 50% of the required credits for each academic year. This is called study progress monitoring which keeps up throughout your studies.
• Language requirements are that you must pass or have passed the following IELTS score –
  • You instantly start your main education at IELTS score of 6.0
  • You follow a preparatory period of a maximum period of 12 months at IELTS score of 5.0
  • You follow a preparatory period of a maximum period of 6 months at an IELTS score of 5.5
  • In addition to this TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge English grades & scale are also accepted as language proficiency tests.

Documents Required for Netherlands Study Visa

The list of documents you would need in the process of your Netherlands Study Visa is given below so that you do not forget them while you are applying. Keep these documents and you will not have much difficulty during the process of application:

• Academic transcripts
• Biometric information
• Birth certificate
• Complete study plan – explaining why you are interested in studying the chosen subject area and how and why it is related to your prior studies
• Completed visa application form
• Financial proof for the entire period of study
• Official letter from the academic institution in the Netherlands
• Photocopies of all the original documents
• Travel and health insurance
• Tuberculosis test (required for citizens from some countries)
• Two photographs
• Valid passport

What to do After Application?

• Collect your residence permit – The IND usually has the residence permit ready within 2 weeks after the positive decision. Then it sends your educational institution a letter indicating when you can collect the residence permit. You have to schedule an appointment to collect it from there. Do check all your information is right on the document.
• Registration with the municipality – Upon arrival in the Netherlands, you must register in the Municipal Personal Records Database in the municipality where you are going to live. You will need a legalized and translated birth certificate so make sure you have that handy.
• TB test – within 3 months of your residence you have to make an appointment with the Area Health Authority (GGD) to undergo a tuberculosis test (TB test).
• Health insurance – Check the website Zorgverzekeringslijn you can read whether you are required to have basic health insurance with a Dutch health insurer or not. 
• Validity of your residence permit – ​The residence permit for study is usually valid for the duration of your education plus 3 months. You can get 1 extra year for a preparatory education or a transition year, for example to learn Dutch. The residence permit is issued for a maximum period of 5 years but can be extended upon request.
• Work and internship – You may only work in paid employment if your employer has a TWV or “Tewerkstellingsvergunning” for you which is a work permit that lets you work there. You are then allowed to work – for a maximum of 16 hours a week or full-time during the summer months June, July and August.
  • You are also allowed to work in the Netherlands as a self employed individual as long as you continue to meet the requirements for your residence permit for study. There is no limit to the amount of hours that you are allowed to work as a self employed individual and you do not need a working permit (TWV). But you will have to get health insurance, get your company registered and pay taxes yourself for it.
  •  For internships – You do not need a TWV if the internship is relevant to your study but you and your educational institution must have signed an internship agreement with the company where you will do your internship. You can find more information at Nuffic.
• Temporarily studying out of the Netherlands – You are allowed to reside in another EU member state to follow part of your studies for a maximum of 360 days while maintaining your Dutch residence permit. You can make use of the intra EU-mobility if your residence is part of a Union or multilateral program comprising mobility measures or a treaty between two or more higher education institutions.
